Roundtable discussion: Opportunities in Africa for MENA banks

21 January 2019

JLT Specialty and Global Trade Review (GTR) hosted a roundtable event in Cairo with regional banks, corporates and London-based insurers to discuss opportunities, appetite and challenges in financing the African continent.

Chaired by JLT Specialty’s Alastair McLeod and attended by Credit, Political & Security Risks broker Michael Swainsbury, the roundtable discussed trade finance in Africa and the role financial institutions can play in plugging the USD $120 billion (African Development Bank, 2018) trade finance gap.

Whilst Western banks have withdrawn from certain territories in Africa, Middle East & North Africa (MENA) banks have managed to continue finance business there.
