Market movers in the energy insurance market

The energy market is constantly evolving to meet client needs; here we provide an update on the latest developments.

  • Nick Burkinshaw has joined Apollo Syndicate Management as their Chief Underwriting Officer, a newly created board-level position. Burkinshaw most recently served as Chairman of Specialty at Fidelis and prior to that he had a long career at Catlin.
  • Graham Kirk has resigned from Oil Casualty Insurance Limited (OCIL) in Bermuda in order to relocate back to the UK with his family.
  • Geoff Hunt who retired from XL Catlin has come out of retirement to join Convex on a part time basis.
  • James McDonald has resigned from AIG owned Talbot where he was Global Head of Marine and Energy, to join Sompo International to lead its upstream energy business (replacing Tom Houston, who recently left the business to join Convex).
  • Simon Urry is to retire from StarStone Syndicate 1301 later this year where he is currently the active underwriter.
  • Ben Wilson, StarStone’s Head of Power and Onshore energy, has resigned from the business. David Message will oversee the power and onshore team until a replacement is found.
  • Mark Sullivan is leaving Barbican to join IGI.
  • Tom Davies has joined The West of England P&I Club’ Fixed P&I underwriting team. He was previously at Lodestar, where he serviced European, Middle East and South East Asian business.
  • Paul Bland has resigned from AmTrust (where he wrote US utility casualty/ energy crossover business) to go to Aspen.
  • Nick Waddell, Hiscox general liability underwriter has resigned to join Convex.

  • Patrick Kenahan, Kimberly Pursell, Michael Watkins, and Jason Pugi have resigned from Allied World (AWAC)’s Bermudian casualty team to join Ascot Bermuda.
  • James Langdon has resigned from Chubb to join AIG in London, as their Head of Energy.
  • Lyndsey Picton is returning to Chaucer London in October from Chaucer Singapore, continuing Upstream underwriting but also taking on a more strategic role. Scott Ho will continue to write the Upstream book in Chaucer Singapore.
  • Ian Picton has resigned from Argenta Singapore.
  • Ian Simons is returning from Amlin Singapore to Amlin London.
  • Ben Giddings is to join Marsh JLT Specialty’s Singapore Upstream team from THB.
  • Steve Farr was promoted to Global Head of Upstream Energy at Axa XL, the role left vacant by the departure of Steve Hawkins to Convex.
  • Bob Clarkson is to join the Fidelis London underwriting team. He was most recently Class Underwriter for Marine Hull and War at Brit Insurance. He had previously worked at QBE and Lloyd’s Claims Office in both underwriting and claims roles.
  • Charles Franks Tokio Marine Kiln CEO is to take on a new unspecified role within Tokio Marine Group, while CUO Paul Culham is to step down after 32 years with the company. Franks will be succeeded by deputy CEO Brad Irick as of 1 January, with Franks remaining on the TMK board.
  • Christine Mello has resigned from Sompo Bermuda to join Chubb Bermuda.
  • John Mohs has joined Sompo Bermuda from Liberty Specialty (IronStarr) Bermuda.
  • Maria Costello has joined Liberty Specialty (IronStarr).
  • April Andruczyk has left Chubb Bermuda.
  • Andrew Watson has moved to AIG Bermuda from Chubb Bermuda.
  • Mike Southgate, Head of Marine, Energy and Engineering at Canopius, is reported to be leaving Lloyd’s insurer.

    John joined JLT in 1987 having spent three years with Leslie & Godwin (now Aon) in the Marine Hull Technical Department.

    John gained extensive knowledge in the technical design and servicing of energy related insurance programmes covering physical damage, business interruption, control of well and liability exposures for a wide spectrum of energy clients including oil & gas lease operators, mobile rig contractors, oil & gas service companies, and major integrated oil companies.

    At JLT Risk Solutions John sat on the "Energy Executive Committee" that oversaw the management and strategy of the Energy Business Unit. In January 2005 John moved from JLT Risk Solutions to Lloyd & Partners where he has responsibility for managing the Energy team. He sits on the Energy & Marine Executive Committee and is a strategic advisor to the LPL Board.

    He is also a broker consultant representative to the London Joint Rig Committee and has worked on a consultancy basis with Oil Insurance Limited (OIL). In the combined Marsh JLT Specialty, Energy and Power team, John now performs the role of Global Chief Client Officer.
