The energy market is constantly evolving to meet client needs; here we provide an update on the latest developments.

  • Mark Mackay (ex Axa XL) has joined HDI in Singapore to head up HDI’s Middle East and Asian Downstream Energy business.
  • Robert (Bob) Clarkson has left Brit where he was hull class underwriter.
  • Doug Howat (ex XL Catlin) has joined Stephen Catlin / Paul Brand’s new start-up insurer, Convex.
  • Steve Hawkins has resigned from his role as head of Upstream Energy at Axa XL, to join Convex.
  • Tom Houston of Sompo has resigned to join Convex reporting to Steve Hawkins.
  • Francis Lobo has resigned from his role of Head of Upstream Oil & Gas Engineering at Canopius to join Convex.
  • John Potter, Antares’ Head of Marine has resigned to join Convex.
  • Sharon Long as resigned from Neon where she was claims director, to join Convex as Head of Claims.
  • Tim Fillingham is leaving Starstone where he was UK Chief Operating Officer, and is rumoured to be returning to the broking fraternity.
  • Sam Upton, a marine and energy liability underwriter at Starstone has resigned to join Allianz.
  • Michael Tweena, has joined Allianz as Senior Risk Consultant, having previously worked as a Risk Engineer for Liberty and Willis.
  • Dermot Dick has stepped down as Chief Underwriting Officer International at Emirates Insurance, in Abu Dhabi, for personal reasons. He will act as a consultant to the company for a period of time.

  • Bill Wagner, a Construction underwriter in the US market, has left Scor and has joined Sompo.
  • Graeme McGeachie and Pete Graham are joining Everest’s international casualty division in London (from Ironshore).
  • David Martin has been appointed Head of Marine and Energy at Ariel Re.
  • Ed Noonan (former Validus’ Chairman and Chief Executive) has joined Starstone Group as its new Chairman.
  • Amy Humphries is moving from QBE to join Allianz (to continue writing Political Violence).
  • Howard Potter has left RSA where he was Head of Marine Product. RSA Pricing Director Richard Read will fill the position in the interim.
  • Mike Reynolds, has stepped down as Deputy Head of Marine at Chubb and left the business with immediate effect.
  • Dieter Berg, former Munich Re executive has been appointed as a non-executive director of Insurance analytics firm Concirrus.
  • Paul Sankey has been promoted to the role of Global Head of Oil & Gas at Liberty Speciality Markets in addition to his role as Head of Energy and Construction in London.
  • Les Rock has returned to active underwriting at London MGA Rokstone after a near eleven-year absence.
  • Vera Schneider (who was previously with Chaucer and currently with Arcus syndicate) has joined T.R. Miller (a Lloyd’s MGA).
  • Lucy Bell has resigned form Skuld – we are not aware of her plans yet.
  • Simon Neale has been let go by Skuld following the announcement of Skuld P&I club closing their Lloyd’s syndicate.
  • Paul Knighton has been appointed as Marine Liability & Logistics Underwriter at Tokio Marine HCC joining them from Skuld, where he was Head of Marine Cargo & Property.
  • Simon Buxton has left Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE (AGCS) where he was Head of Energy & Marine, to pursue opportunities outside of AGCS.Ulrich Kadow has been appointed as AGCS Global Head of Marine reporting to Chief Underwriting Officer of Specialty Paul O’Neill who will directly oversee AGCS’s Energy business on an interim basis.
  • George Foxall has resigned from Aon to join Beazley’s Upstream Energy team.
  • James Mecham, Chaucer’s senior class underwriter for international general liability is leaving to join Arch.
  • Jason Behrer (based in New York) has joined Starr Tech from Liberty to head Starr’s US Construction business.
  • Will Morris has resigned as underwriter at Nuclear Risk Insurers (NRI).
  • Hassane Rhazouani has left IGI (destination unknown at this stage).
  • Paul Newton, Axa XL’s London Market Head of Marine Hull and Liability, and Guy Brett Axa XL Cargo and Freight liability underwriter are both leaving by the firm (their destinations at this stage are unknown).
  • Mary Vogiatzidou has been appointed to the role of Senior Marine underwriter in MS Amlin’s Dubai office She most recently served as a senior hull underwriter in RSA Group’s marine division.
  • Frank Argondizzo and Matt Chung formerly of HCC has joined HDI effective July 1 and will be underwriting Downstream Energy and Power & Utilities property out of NYC.
  • David Hawksby is to take responsibility for downstream energy at AIG (as well as current role at Talbot) and will move to Houston.
  • Talal Al Zain has been appointed Group Chief Executive Officer of Trust International Insurance & Reinsurance Company having held senior executive positions in the fields of banking and investment.
  • Jan von Kamp is due to start at Asia Capital Reinsurance in Singapore in August having resigned from HDI where he was Head of Global Energy.
  • Adam Groves, Downstream Underwriter for Chubb in Dubai is relocating to Chubb London.

    John joined JLT in 1987 having spent three years with Leslie & Godwin (now Aon) in the Marine Hull Technical Department.

    John gained extensive knowledge in the technical design and servicing of energy related insurance programmes covering physical damage, business interruption, control of well and liability exposures for a wide spectrum of energy clients including oil & gas lease operators, mobile rig contractors, oil & gas service companies, and major integrated oil companies.

    At JLT Risk Solutions John sat on the "Energy Executive Committee" that oversaw the management and strategy of the Energy Business Unit. In January 2005 John moved from JLT Risk Solutions to Lloyd & Partners where he has responsibility for managing the Energy team. He sits on the Energy & Marine Executive Committee and is a strategic advisor to the LPL Board.

    He is also a broker consultant representative to the London Joint Rig Committee and has worked on a consultancy basis with Oil Insurance Limited (OIL). In the combined Marsh JLT Specialty, Energy and Power team, John now performs the role of Global Chief Client Officer.
