Newbury Racecourse is delighted to announce the introduction of a brand new £100,000 stayers handicap to be sponsored by JLT and named the JLT Cup. The two mile and half furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards will take place on Saturday 21 July and form part of Weatherbys Super Sprint Day which will see a total prize fund of over £500,000 offered on the day itself and over £612,000 across the two-day mid-summer meeting.

In response to industry demand from horsemen to see an enhanced programme for stayers combines with a wish from the Newbury Board, the newly formed handicap will also be welcomed by the betting industry. The £100,000 prize fund sees a £30,000 contribution from The British Horseracing Authority’s Development Fund.

Under a five-year deal, this is a significant sponsorship on the flat for JLT Group who also partner with Cheltenham, Aintree and Ascot for National Hunt races such as the JLT Novices Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and The JLT Long Walk at Ascot.

Jonathan Palmer-Brown of JLT Group, said: “JLT has had a successful collaboration with the horseracing industry for many years, and we recognise the important contribution that Newbury Racecourse makes to this.

‘The JLT Cup is a significant sponsorship agreement and demonstrates our continuing support of the horseracing industry and the important contribution it makes to the UK economy as a whole.”
Julian Thick, Chief Executive of Newbury Racecourse added: “In response to appetite from horsemen and the industry for an enhanced stayers programme, we are delighted to introduce the new JLT Cup and thanks to sponsors JLT Group for their contribution and commitment.

This has been on our wish list for a while so it’s great that we have been able play our part in making it happen.”

Simon Clare of Ladbrokes Coral added: “This is a welcome addition to an already strong card. A valuable handicap and one for the stayers is a great enhancement to the day and means that our punters can really get stuck into a good betting race.”

Henry Candy also voiced his support for the new race commenting: “Its great to see a valuable handicap for stayers introduced at Newbury and should be well supported.”

About Newbury Racecourse

Newbury Racecourse held its first race in 1905 and has long been one of Britain's leading tracks, staging up to 30 days of top class Jump and Flat racing annually, with at least one raceday in every month of the year.

The highlight of Newbury's Jump racing season is the £250,000 Ladbrokes Trophy, a handicap chase over an extended three and a quarter miles, which takes place on December 1 in 2018.

On the Flat, Newbury's high-quality programme includes the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes on May 19, with the Group One race over a mile worth £350,000.

The racecourse is also a thriving events venue, hosting a huge range of activities including weddings, concerts, and conferences for 20 to 1,000 attendees for a wide spectrum of businesses and organisations in stunning surroundings. In addition, it runs a successful private nursery, providing a safe, happy and stimulating learning environment for many pre-school children.

Newbury is now home to a major housing development by David Wilson Homes, allowing people to live in a unique location alongside a world-renowned sporting venue, which also benefits from a Nuffield Health Club.

The racecourse now has its own 36-bedroom hotel, The Lodge, which opened in June, 2016.

The £20-million 'heartspace' redevelopment of the Racecourse, which began in 2016, is now well underway.

August 2017 saw the new Eastern Entrance opened as well as a re-modelled pre-parade ring, which was first used in the spring along with an enlarged parade ring and winner's enclosure with enhanced viewing for racegoers.
